ZAP
The school I am currently teaching at uses the ZAP (Zeros Aren't Permitted) program. Basically this program enables teachers to "ZAP" students who do not turn in an assignment, and that student will have to stay after school, or attend Friday School until the assignment is completed. I am a strong believer in this program. Has anyone else experienced this program or one similar? What are your thoughts about such programs?
Swearing
How do you guys handle swearing in schools? I have tried several different methods such as verbal reprimand, referral to administration, and assigning push ups as punishment. Every option seems flawed to me since verbal reprimand will most likely get taken as a grain of salt, administration has better things to do than to spend his day punishing students for foul language, and push ups can be refused. I did have one student refuse to do push ups and I stood there stunned and confused because I cannot force a student to do push ups. Is referral to administration the best solution? What do you think?
Students as buddies
I recently stepped into a teaching position in which the teacher before me had developed very close personal relationships with his students. I have noticed that the students are now looking to develop such relationships with me. This puts me in a very awkward situation because I do not wish to have personal relationships with my students, but at the same time desire their respect. Thus far I have handled such situations by not responding to their personal questions or comments. Is it appropriate to confront the students and explain that I am their teacher and not their buddy?
