Students as buddies

I recently stepped into a teaching position in which the teacher before me had developed very close personal relationships with his students. I have noticed that the students are now looking to develop such relationships with me. This puts me in a very awkward situation because I do not wish to have personal relationships with my students, but at the same time desire their respect. Thus far I have handled such situations by not responding to their personal questions or comments. Is it appropriate to confront the students and explain that I am their teacher and not their buddy?

  1. I think that it would be fair to do that IF you really needed to, but i would try just playing it cool for a bit and see if they back off. in middleschool they wanted to know everything about me, it seemed to be to my bennifit if that didnt happen!

  2. Yeah you may want to stay away from being buddy buddy with the student population. Good way to start rumors, ask cooke.

  3. I had a student walk up to me the other day and call me buddy I told him I was not his buddy. He said that I was mean, but that really didn't bother me.

  4. Yes. Personally explain to them your role. Keep it light but firm.
